We are looking for an enthusiastic R&D Scientist Microbiota & Intestinal Health who would like to join the FrieslandCampina R&D Nutrition Team which consists of over 30 members based across Wageningen, Singapore, and China and works together with other Research, Product Development, and Marketing teams to study health effects, substantiate our products, and support communication. You will be working in the cluster Exploration on gut microbiota and intestinal health related projects.

What we ask:

We are looking for a collaborative and scientifically curious professional with:

  • A PhD/Master in Microbiology, Nutrition, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in gut microbiota, intestinal health, or related research in academia and/or industry.
  • Knowledge of gut microbiota composition and function across different life stages, including healthy adults and early life nutrition.
  • Understanding of the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract and knowledge of the generation and biological relevance of nutrient degradation products and gut microbial metabolites and their impact on human health.
  • Ability to critically evaluate microbiota, metabolite, and health-related data and translate findings into scientific conclusions.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary project teams and manage multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.

Employment benefits:

  • Salary between €4,550 and €6,000 gross per month (full-time), depending on experience and fit for the role.
  • A work week of 32 to 38 hours, a 5% year-end allowance, 10% company bonus, 8% holiday allowance and a pension scheme.

Vacancy description:

As an R&D Scientist – Microbiota & Intestinal Health, you will contribute to the design, execution, interpretation, and communication of research related to gut microbiota and intestinal health. You will work closely with colleagues in Nutrition Research, Product Development, Regulatory Affairs, and external partners to generate scientific evidence supporting current and future nutritional solutions. You will provide microbiota and intestinal health expertise within project teams and help translate emerging scientific insights into relevant research opportunities and product applications. The role requires a solid understanding of intestinal physiology and the interactions between nutrition, gut microbiota, microbial metabolites, and health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design, execution, and interpretation of microbiota-related clinical, preclinical, and in vitro studies.
  • Apply knowledge of intestinal physiology, digestion, nutrient absorption, gut barrier function, and host–microbe interactions to research programs.
  • Evaluate the effects of ingredients and dietary components on microbiota composition, functionality, and metabolite production.
  • Interpret microbiota, metabolomics, and clinical data to support product substantiation and innovation projects.
  • Support the identification of relevant biomarkers, endpoints, and analytical approaches for gut health studies.
  • Collaborate with external partners, CROs, and academic institutions to ensure high-quality study execution.
  • Translate complex scientific findings into clear recommendations and presentations for internal stakeholders.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, conference presentations, and knowledge-sharing activities.
  • Support and coach junior researchers, students, and technicians where appropriate.
  • Stay informed about emerging developments in gut microbiota, intestinal physiology, and nutritional sciences.
