This internship focuses on one of the controversial topics within nLCA: choosing the right functional unit. There are many possible options, and the choice can dramatically shape the results and how different studies compare to each other. Each approach comes with its own trade‑offs, affecting how we interpret findings, how fair comparisons are, and how useful the results become for policy and decision‑making. By exploring these choices, this internship aims to bring more clarity and support better and more transparent practices going forward.
The way we produce and consume food is under real pressure. Our current food system is pushing past the planet’s limits, while at the same time many people struggle with diet‑related health problems. It’s becoming increasingly clear that we need to rethink both how food is made and what ends up on our plates. A lot of great work is already happening, for example, research on environmental footprints, studies on healthy diets, and efforts to make food systems more sustainable. However, we need to find better ways to link the environmental impact of food production with its nutritional value. To do that, we need scientific methods and metrics that help us compare foods in a fair and consistent way.
To be successful in this position, you:
- Are enrolled in a relevant university program with a focus on environmental science, nutrition, sustainability, or related fields.
- Familiarity with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principles; knowledge of nLCA is a plus.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to synthesize complex information into clear summaries.
